How Long Does a Septic System Last?
Septic systems are designed to provide long term service to homes, they can last more than fifty years at a time. However, they do require proper maintenance. Systems that fail or run into problems usually do so because they have not been serviced properly. Two of the most common problems that plagues septic systems are tree roots growing through the pipe, this leads to leaks or blockages, and can often be detected by an unpleasant smell or wet area in the yard or not having your septic system cleaned or pumped every few years.
How Often Should I Have My Septic Tank Pumped?
What Maintenance Services Does A Septic Tank Need?
It is important that septic systems be cleaned at least once every three to five years in order to prevent build-up and blockages from debris inside the tank. When pumping your septic tank, I will also check the condition of your outlet tee or filter. Prior to 1999, concrete outlet tees were used to keep solids from leaving your septic tank. Concrete outlet tee's can become damaged or fall apart causing solids to enter your drain lines and clogged them. After 1999, filters were installed and took the place of concrete outlet tee's. If your septic tank has a filter I will clean the filter when pumping your septic tank but recommend having your filter cleaned once a year.
Always watch for warning signs of trouble with your sewage system:
- Sewage Surfacing on top of field
- Sewage backing up into the house
- Mushy / wet ground around tank or drain field
- Slow draining toilets or drains (Gurgling)
- Sewage odors
- Conserve on water usage
- Divert surface water away from your septic system (Roof Drains, Sump Pumps, hoses etc.)
- Do not allow vehicles larger than a riding mower to drive on or park over your drain field area
- Do not flush anything that will not dissolve in water
- Do not plant trees or shrubs over sewage systems
- Do not pour down the drain or flush hazardous chemicals
- Use detergents and soaps which are low in phosphates
- Use a septic system treatment additive. Our truck is stocked with BioTab. BioTab is a tablet that when flushed down your toilet once a month helps your system stay in proper working order. BioTab is a highly concentrated tablet of bacteria (both aerobic and anaerobic) and enzymes that acts as a biological activator for septic tanks.
